To sum up: A couple of weeks ago, Christie’s withdrew their much-hyped 1939 Auto Union from their showcase Retromobile auction at the terminal minute. Since then, any number of theories about the car’s provenance have been floated, mostly concerning the veracity of the chassis number, and the car’s racing history.
Today, they announced their findings exclusively to Hemmings, that the automobile is chassis 19, not 21, which was the winner of the 1939 Grand Prix du de France. It is the only extant D Type with Grand Prix history, however.
For the next week, they will be accepting sealed bids. Don’t pain with anything under $5,000,000…
